The terminology changed; the problem of recognition did not.* ## The Boundary We May Have to Cross One day, humanity may receive an unmistakably artificial signal from another star. We may build a machine whose inner status can no longer be treated as a philosophical afterthought. We may learn that an animal mind is richer than our institutions allowed. We may collect UAP data that supports an explanation no current category contains. Any of those discoveries would change the meaning of NHI. The acronym might become the name of a recognized class of minds, or it might disappear as more precise language replaces it. “Non-human” is, after all, a negative definition. It tells us what something is not while revealing almost nothing about what it is. For now, the term marks a boundary. On one side is the intelligence humanity recognizes because it resembles us. On the other are minds, systems, signals, claims, and possibilities that test the limits of recognition. The purpose of a field guide is not to fill every blank space with a creature.
